9th Grade: Relationships

The Council on Adolescents of Catawba County follows State Competency Goals as mandated by the Department of Public Instruction of North Carolina.

Program Objective
To empower teens to make healthy choices in dating relationships with emphasis on abstinence as the only sure method of preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

Program Goals
To identify components of healthy and abusive relationships.
Examine failure rates and effectiveness and birth control methods.
Encourage students to set sexual limits.
Identify and understand how sexually transmitted diseases are spread and health risks.
Develop safe dating strategies.

Program Daily Outline
Day 1
Welcome and complete pre-test.
Introduction into teen dating relationships
Healthy Relationship Bingo
Movie “Looking out 4 U”

Day 2
Divide class by gender
Describe male and female reproductive systems with instruction and matching game.
Discussion on difficulties and dangers of teen pregnancy.
Describe failure rates of birth control with pregnancy handout.
Sexually transmitted disease presentation and handout.

Day 3
Transmission Game, illustrates how diseases are spread
High Risk/Low Risk Game, identifies dangerous and safe behavior.
Possible progression of sexual behavior and setting limits.

Day 4
Sexual harassment versus flirting.
Define statuatory rape.
Movie “Rape:  Get the Facts”
Safe Dating
Small group activity on break up
Complete Post-test
