Phase II: Silk Wood/Men Talk Silk Wood/Men Talk is a thirteen session phase consisting of graduates of Wise Guys/IMAGES. This phase, the youth will be coupled with a parent of the same gender. This is to improve the communication and relationships within the family and reduce experimentation of unhealthy behaviors. This teaches youth about healthy lifestyles with an emphasis on goals, careers and family relationships. The Silk Wood/Men Talk program uses an innovative approach including entrepreneurial experiences, community service and family enrichment. A service project will be required by each dyad group (parent/youth) Through a collaborative venture with Peoples Bank in Viewmont, each family unit will have a stipend of $200.00 invested as they enter the course. Upon completion of the thirteen sessions, representatives of People Bank will educate families on how to open various accounts, investments and other financial venues. Families will also begin looking at post-high school job opportunities through the interactive internet program “True-Life” and the entrepreneurial program “Young Biz”. Throughout the course, parents and students will practice techniques to improve communication, problem solving and decision making skills. The highlight of the program is a three day trip to Wilmington to visit museums, colleges and the beach. |
